When the 20 yard is the right call
If we could keep only one container size, this would be it. At 22 feet long by 7.5 feet wide by 4.5 feet high it holds roughly six pickup truck loads with a 3–4 ton allowance built for genuinely mixed debris, and it still fits on a normal single-family driveway across Bakersfield and Kern County. Is a 20 yard dumpster right for a roofing job?
Often, yes — the 20 is one of the two sizes we point roofing jobs toward, alongside the 10. It suits a fuller tear-off or a two-layer roof better than a 10, where the shingle weight would use up a smaller allowance fast.
Can I put concrete, dirt, brick or tile in a 20 yard dumpster?
It is not the right container for that. Heavy, dense material like concrete, dirt, brick and tile belongs in a 10 or a 15. If a job has both remodel debris and a slab of concrete coming out, we will often pair a 20 with a 10 rather than try to fit it all in one box.
Do I need a permit for a 20 yard dumpster in my driveway?
No. Most 20 yard deliveries sit entirely on a private driveway with no permit needed. A permit only applies if the container has to sit on a public street or sidewalk, handled through the City of Bakersfield Public Works — or the town's own permit process if the job is in Shafter, Wasco, Delano or Arvin.
