Call USA North 811 before you dig
Before any container gets set near an open trench, foundation excavation or utility line on an active site, we tell every jobsite account the same thing: call USA North 811 first. It's California's official one-call notification center for Kern County, reached by dialing 811 or 800-642-2444 or through usanorth811.org, and it needs to be contacted at least two working days before digging starts. It's free, it's required before excavation, and it's the single easiest way to avoid hitting a buried gas, electric or water line while a container or excavator is on site. Separately, if the container needs to sit on a public street or sidewalk rather than the job's own lot, the City of Bakersfield generally requires a temporary Public Works permit. For active builds, we can also run a swap schedule — a full container picked up and an empty one dropped the same visit — so the site never sits with a box too full to use.
What loads into a construction container
Framing lumber and cutoffs, drywall, siding, roofing scraps, packaging, insulation, trim and general job debris all load together in a standard construction container. Wooden pallets are generally allowed in construction and demolition loads, and full containers typically route to Bena Landfill out on Neumarkel Road, which Kern County Public Works permits for construction and demolition debris including asphalt, brick, concrete, drywall, fencing, metal and wood.
Concrete, block, brick, dirt and tile don't belong in a general debris container — they're dense enough to blow past a reasonable weight allowance in a fraction of the volume, and that material should be planned into a 10 yard or 15 yard container instead. Talk to us before delivery if a phase of your job is mostly heavy material and we'll plan the container differently.
Which size suits the job
Framing-phase debris on a small remodel often fits a 15 yard. Most active new-construction and larger remodel jobs run on a 20 yard or 30 yard for the bulk of the build. Do I need to call USA North 811 before a container is delivered to a jobsite?
If the container is only being set on a driveway or paved surface, generally no. But if any digging, trenching or excavation is happening on the same site, USA North 811 needs to be called at least two working days before excavation so underground utilities can be marked. It's free and it covers all of Kern County.
Do I need a City of Bakersfield permit to place a container in the street on a jobsite?
In most cases yes — a temporary Public Works permit generally applies for public street or sidewalk placement, while placement entirely on the job's own lot usually doesn't need one.
Can you set up a swap schedule for an active build?
Yes — for ongoing jobs we run scheduled swaps so a full container is picked up and an empty one dropped in the same visit, timed to your framing, drywall and trim phases.
Do wooden pallets and packaging go in the same container as framing scraps?
Yes — construction and demolition loads generally allow wooden pallets even where general household waste wouldn't. Packaging and framing cutoffs load together without issue.
What happens if concrete or brick ends up mixed into a construction load?
A small amount usually isn't a problem, but a load that's mostly concrete or masonry will run over a reasonable weight allowance fast since those materials are so dense. If you know a phase will generate heavy debris, tell us ahead of time and we'll plan for it with a smaller, purpose-sized container instead.
Can the container stay on an active jobsite for weeks or months?
Yes — long-running rentals with scheduled swaps are common on multi-month builds across Kern County. We'll help you plan the swap timing and any street-permit renewal when you call.
