Real Bakersfield Project Examples by Dumpster Size

The question we hear most often isn't "how much does it cost" — it's "what size do I actually need." Cubic yards don't mean much until you connect them to a real project. So instead of another abstract sizing chart, here's how our five container sizes map to the actual jobs we deliver for across Bakersfield and Kern County every week.

10 yard — 14' L × 7.5' W × 3.5' H

The 10 yard is our smallest container, and it covers more projects than people expect because it's sized for focused, single-area jobs rather than whole-property cleanouts.

• Garage cleanout. A standard single or two-car garage that's accumulated years of tools, boxes, old furniture, and general clutter typically fits in a 10 yard with room to spare.
• Small bathroom remodel. Tile, an old vanity, fixtures, and drywall from a single bathroom gut generally fits comfortably here.
• Single-layer roof tear-off. A standard residential roof with one layer of shingles coming off — this is our default recommendation for most roofing jobs, since shingle weight is the limiting factor, not volume.
• Small landscaping cleanup. Removing an overgrown flower bed, a few small trees, or general yard debris from a modest lot.

15 yard — 16' L × 7.5' W × 4.5' H

A step up in both length and height, the 15 yard is our go-to for projects that are a notch bigger than a single room but not yet whole-house scale.

• Multi-layer roof tear-off. A roof with two or more layers of shingles, or a larger roof footprint, generally calls for this size over the 10 yard.
• Kitchen remodel. Cabinetry, countertops, flooring, and drywall from a full kitchen renovation typically fits here, especially when appliances are being handled separately.
• Deck or fence removal. A residential deck tear-out or a full fence replacement project generates enough wood debris to fill this size without overloading it.
• Moderate estate cleanout. Clearing two or three rooms plus a garage, without the full scope of an entire home.

20 yard — 22' L × 7.5' W × 4.5' H

The 20 yard is a genuine mid-size workhorse, long enough to handle bulkier material without the extra height of our larger boxes.

• Whole-house decluttering. A homeowner clearing out a small-to-mid-size home ahead of a move or sale, where most rooms have some volume of items going but the home isn't packed to the ceiling.
• Flooring replacement. Pulling old carpet, tile, or hardwood across multiple rooms of a home.
• Attic or basement cleanout combined with garage. When a project spans more than one storage area of a home.
• Small commercial cleanout. Clearing out a small office or retail space between tenants.

30 yard — 22' L × 7.5' W × 6' H

Same footprint as the 20 yard but noticeably taller, the 30 yard is where bigger residential and light commercial jobs land.

• Full whole-house cleanout. A larger home, or a home with heavy accumulation over many years, being cleared entirely — common in estate situations.
• Major home renovation. A project touching multiple rooms at once — flooring, drywall, cabinetry, and fixtures across a significant portion of a house.
• New construction debris (smaller build). Framing scraps, packaging, and general construction waste from a smaller new-build or an addition.
• Large landscaping overhaul. A full yard renovation involving significant tree removal, old hardscaping, and general debris — kept separate from a dedicated yard-waste container if the volume is mixed with construction material.

40 yard — 22' L × 7.5' W × 8' H

Our largest container, reserved for the biggest jobs where volume is genuinely high and the material is generally lighter (bulky rather than dense).

• New construction debris (larger build). A full home build or major addition generating substantial framing, packaging, and general construction waste over the life of the project.
• Large commercial cleanout or demolition. Clearing a larger commercial space or handling debris from a bigger demolition project.
• Whole-property estate cleanout with outbuildings. A large home plus a detached garage, shed, or other structures all being cleared as part of one project.
• Multi-phase renovation. A gut renovation touching most of a large home at once, generating drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and fixture debris in volume.

Note: because roofing and heavy materials like concrete, dirt, brick, and tile are weight-restricted rather than volume-restricted, we don't recommend the 30 or 40 yard sizes for those specific materials even on large jobs — a 10 or 15 yard container, possibly with a swap, is the better approach. Matching your project to a size, fast

If your project doesn't map cleanly onto one of the examples above, that's normal — real jobs are messy and don't always fit a clean category. The fastest way to get sized correctly is to call and describe: what kind of project, roughly how much material, and whether it's dense debris (concrete, shingles, dirt) or bulkier lighter material (furniture, drywall, packaging). Those three details are usually enough for us to recommend a size with confidence, whether you're working out of Southeast Bakersfield, Oildale, or one of the outlying Kern County towns like Delano or Tehachapi.

Why sizing correctly matters

Getting the size right the first time avoids two problems: overpaying for a container bigger than the job needs, or underestimating and needing a second delivery mid-project. We'd rather spend two extra minutes on the phone confirming scope than have either of those happen.
